Palm Tree Care Tips from The Greenery, Inc.

Palm trees are more than just iconic…they’re a defining feature of Southern landscapes. With their tropical charm and beautiful silhouettes, palms bring natural beauty and character to any outdoor space. But like all living things, palms need proper care to thrive, especially as the temperatures being to rise.

Palm Tree Care

Pruning for Health and Beauty

Late spring is the ideal time to give your palm trees a little TLC. One of the top reasons to prune your palms is to remove dead fronds and those pesky, messy berries. If left unchecked, these berries can stain walkways, clog your pool filter, and even attract unwanted pests.

Pruning not only improves appearance – it also boosts the tree’s overall health. However, it’s important not to go overboard. Over-pruning can do more harm than good, weakening the tree and making it more susceptible to sun damage and disease.

Our experts at The Greenery, Inc. follow a tried-and-true rule: the healthiest pruning shape looks like clock hands at nine and three. This keeps the palm looking natural while ensuring enough fronds are left to protect the tree.

More Than Just a Trim

Palm tree care goes beyond just trimming. At The Greenery, Inc., we understand that palm health can also be affected by nutrient deficiencies, soil issues, and invasive pests. Our skilled crews are trained to identify early warning signs and provide the right treatments – from fertilization and soil care to preventative solutions that keep palms stress-free all year long.

To ensure your palm trees remain healthy and visually appealing, consider the following:

  • Prune only dead or damaged fronds: Removing healthy, green fronds can weaken the tree and reduce its ability to produce food through photosynthesis.
  • Avoid overpruning: Pruning more than 25% of the foliage at once can stress the palm and make it more susceptible to disease and pests.
  • Use proper tools: Always use clean, sharp tools to make cuts.
  • Be cautious with nutrient deficiencies: Yellowing fronds may indicate a potassium deficiency. Removing these leaves can exacerbate the problem.
  • Prune at the right time: Late spring is ideal for pruning, but avoid heavy pruning during the hottest months to prevent stress on the tree.

Whether you’re caring for a single palm on your property or multiple trees on your commercial landscape, you can count on The Greenery, Inc. to deliver expert care tailored to the unique needs of Southern landscapes. Let us help you keep your palms strong, healthy, and picture-perfect.

Spring Enhancements: Get Ahead of Summer with The Greenery, Inc.

As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, your landscape is gearing up for a major seasonal shift. Spring is the perfect time to give your yard the attention it needs to thrive through the hot summer months. At The Greenery, Inc., we’re helping homeowners across the Lowcountry prepare their landscapes with expert spring enhancements designed to protect, prevent, and perfect.

Protect Your Landscape – and Your Family
Warmer weather brings more than sunshine…it also brings an uptick in pests and lawn diseases. Fire ants, fleas, ticks, and fungal infections love the spring and summer conditions, but you don’t have to let them take over your yard!

Spring Enhancement

Our teams at The Greenery recommend early preventative fungicide and pesticide applications to keep your lawn healthy and your family safe. Acting now can stop these unwelcome guests before they become a serious problem. Whether it’s your backyard, front lawn, or garden beds – our treatments are designed to shield your entire landscape from seasonal threats.

Pro tip: The earlier you treat, the better the protection. Don’t wait until pests move in = schedule your application today!

Optimize with a Spring Irrigation Tune-Up
As the heat ramps up, your irrigation system becomes your landscape’s lifeline. A spring tune-up is key to making sure it’s working efficiently, delivering just the right amount of water exactly where your plants need it. It’s important to water your lawn deeply once a week, aiming for about 1 inch of water per week. Early morning watering helps reduce evaporation and fungal diseases.

Spring Enhancement

The Greenery’s irrigation experts will inspect, adjust, and optimize your system—preventing water waste, reducing your utility bill, and ensuring your lawn and plants stay healthy through the peak of summer.

Preparing Your Yard for Spring
In the South, spring is a crucial time to prepare your yard for the upcoming growing season and ensure that your landscape thrives:

Clean Up Winter Debris:  Remove fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris from your lawn and garden beds. This cleanup allows sunlight to reach the soil, promoting healthy grass growth and reducing the risk of pests and diseases.

☑ Fertilize Appropriately:  Apply a slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients to your lawn. In the south, it’s recommended to fertilize around May 1st, aligning with the active growth period of warm-season grasses.

Address Thatch & Aeration:  If your lawn has a thick layer of thatch (over ½ inch), consider dethatching to improve water penetration and root growth. Thatch is a layer of dead and living plant material that forms between the soil surface and green vegetation.  Aeration can alleviate soil compaction, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.

Overseed Bare Spots:  Identify areas with thin or bare grass and overseed them to promote a lush, uniform lawn. It’s an easy way to improve the density of turf and enhance your lawn’s color. This is especially important for lawns that may have suffered winter damage.

Let’s Get Your Yard Summer-Ready
Spring is the season of preparation, and with The Greenery’s help, your yard can stay lush, vibrant, and pest-free all summer long. Whether you’re looking for preventative treatments or a system tune-up, our teams are ready to help you stay one step ahead of the heat.

Celebrating the Women of The Greenery, Inc. During Women’s History Month

At The Greenery, Inc., we are proud to honor and celebrate the incredible women who have played an essential role in shaping our company and the landscaping industry at large for 52 years. This Women’s History Month, we take a moment to highlight the powerful women who bring creativity, expertise, and leadership to every aspect of our work.

The landscaping industry in the United States is made up of around 1 million individuals, yet women represent a only around 8-10% workforce. At The Greenery, Inc., we are proud to have more than 70 women contributing their skills and knowledge across various departments daily. Women are making a difference throughout The Greenery, Inc. at all levels in our corporation from horticulturalists, in-the-field landscape services, business development, administration and executive level leadership.  These women not only bring their passion for nature and design but also create lasting impacts on their teams and the clients they serve.

Here are just a few voices from The Greenery, Inc. that reflect the unique and empowering experiences of women in this ever-evolving field:

Deirdre Froelich, Business Developer

Deidre has flourished in her role as Business Developer at The Greenery, Inc. She loves being involved and representing The Greenery, Inc. in various community events across her territory in Savannah, Georgia. Not only is she giving back to the community, but Deirdre is also building lasting connections with clients and other colleagues in the green industry.

“Being a woman in the landscape industry has taught me that success is rooted in determination and collaboration,” share Dee. “At The Greenery, Inc., we thrive by embracing innovation and cultivating strong relationships. This Women’s History Month, I celebrate the women who inspire progress, break barriers, and help our industry grow, one project at a time. I’m proud to work alongside so many incredible women at The Greenery!”

Holly Haakerson, CRM on Hilton Head Island

Holly’s journey with The Greenery, Inc. is a beautiful example of how the landscaping industry can empower women to grow professionally. “This position has been evolving since the day I started,” Holly says. “I have been given the opportunity and freedom to make it an incredible career. Not only does this position enable creativity and growth as a horticulturist, but it also opens up conversations with locals, inviting empowerment and responsibility. I treat each client as if they were my own neighbor asking a friend for guidance.”

For Holly, being a woman in the green industry is about more than just plants – it’s about building connections and embracing nature’s evolving beauty. “Being a woman in the Green industry means I get to embrace my creativity, embellish my love for nature, and build relationships with strangers every day. Some projects begin with a glass of iced tea on the back deck, others with a casual conversation on the porch swing or a walk around a 40-year-old property that holds more memories than the heart can measure. Sometimes I must remind myself, this is not my vision. It’s someone’s home, vacation getaway, or a family’s estate for generations.”

Andrea Van Dijk, Accountant Manager

Andrea Van Dijk’s story is a testament to the long-term growth opportunities at The Greenery. Starting her career almost 20 years ago in the Garden Center, Andrea’s dedication and hard work have led her to her current role as Accountant Manager. “I have learned that dedication, hard work, and loyalty provide opportunities to succeed within our company.  The Greenery wants to see people grow!”

Andrea’s journey is a reminder of the importance of hard work, talent and perseverance, and how those values can provide promotion and career success.

Stacy Kraus, Business Developer

Stacy, who has found her place as a Business Developer at The Greenery, Inc. shares her experience as a woman in a male-dominated industry. “As a woman working in a predominantly male industry, I have found my time at The Greenery to be very supportive and welcoming. I am surrounded by great teammates and leaders every day.  We are all working as one – ‘speaking the same language.’ The Greenery definitely supports my drive and willingness to grow – which is so important in my career!”

Stacy’s admiration for the supportive culture at The Greenery shines through in her words about her manager, Melissa Brock: “If you know me, you know I believe The Greenery is the best company I’ve ever worked for – and my boss, Melissa Brock, is the best manager I’ve ever worked with! It truly inspires me to be supported by Melissa and other great women on my team, and throughout our company!”

Melissa Brock, Director of Business Development

Melissa Brock, who leads our Business Development team, reflects on how her role at The Greenery has shaped her career. “I have learned that a ‘job’ can be a career path. The Greenery has been very supportive in my professional growth, not only in the landscape industry but also in serving our community.”

As a leader in the company, Melissa’s commitment to supporting the team and encouraging professional growth is an inspiration to many. She embodies what it means to lead with empathy and vision.

Ruthie Edwards, the First Lady of The Greenery, Inc

Ruthie Edwards is a visionary who transformed both her community and the landscape industry on Hilton Head Island. In the early 1970s, Ruthie, alongside her husband Berry, moved their family to the island and began their journey with a landscaping business that grew into one of the most respected companies in the southeast – The Greenery, Inc.

But Ruthie’s impact extends beyond business. In 1973, while driving through South Carolina, she discovered a historic church for sale in Ridgeland. Despite its decaying state, Ruthie saw its potential and was captivated by its rich history. She and her family purchased and relocated the church to Hilton Head (no small feat!) where it would serve as the foundation of their growing business. Thanks to Ruthie’s perseverance, this act of preservation ensured that the church’s 142-year-old story lived on.

Through Ruthie’s determination, the church found a new life, becoming The Greenery’s Antiques & Garden Collectibles Shop, where visitors today are still drawn to its tranquil, historic charm.

Ruthie’s legacy is not only in the success she built but in her commitment to preserving the past, honoring history, and creating something lasting for future generations.

Empowering Women in Landscaping

At The Greenery, Inc., we believe in creating an environment where every team member, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive. Our commitment to professional development, creativity, and collaboration has fostered an atmosphere where women can excel, innovate, and lead with confidence.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to acknowledge the vital contributions of the women of The Greenery, Inc. From designing beautiful landscapes to managing operations and finances, these women inspire and motivate us every day. We are proud to have them as part of our team and look forward to continuing to empower women in our industry for years to come.

To all the women at The Greenery, Inc., thank you for your passion, dedication, and hard work.

A Fresh Start for Your Landscape: Planning for 2025

January is a great month to take inventory of your yard so you can plan out new landscape projects for the year. Think of it as “new year resolutions” for your landscape!

It’s valuable to take the time as we start a new year to reflect on your landscape and think about ways to improve it for the upcoming seasons. Whether you’re hoping to add vibrant color, increase privacy, or simply refresh your outdoor space, it all starts with assessing what worked (and what didn’t) in your garden last year. By following these simple steps, you can set yourself (and your yard) up for success in the coming year.

Step One: Check Plant Health
Start by taking a walk around your property, paying close attention to each plant. Are they thriving or struggling? Look for any signs of disease, pests, or poor growth. If some plants aren’t doing well, make note of them. This will give you a chance to plan for replacements or take action to improve their health. Early identification can prevent larger problems later on, ensuring your landscape stays vibrant and healthy throughout the year.

Step Two: Evaluate Growth
Now that you’ve checked on your plants’ health, it’s time to evaluate their growth. Did your plants grow as expected? Are some areas becoming too crowded, or are certain plants out of control? Take a good look at how each plant is interacting with the space around it. You may find that some plants need to be thinned, moved, or swapped for something that fits the area better. Adjusting your garden layout now will help everything flourish throughout the year.

Step Three: Identify Improvements
Next, consider areas of your landscape that could use a little extra attention. Are there spots in your yard that feel dull or lack color? Would you like to add privacy, attract birds, or create a specific focal point in your garden? Now is the time to think about what plants will best suit your needs and enhance your outdoor living space. Whether it’s a flowering shrub, a tree for shade, or colorful flowers to brighten up a corner, identifying these needs will help guide your planning.

Step Four: Make a Plan with Your Greenery Client Relations Manager
At this point, you’ve got a good idea of what needs attention in your landscape. But why go it alone? Let our professional and knowledgeable team at The Greenery, Inc. guide you through the process! Our Greenery Client Relations Managers are here to help you develop a plan based on your goals and preferences. Whether you have questions about plant selection, layout, or care, we’re ready to offer personalized recommendations and expert advice to help get the most out of your landscape.

With our help, you can keep those “new year resolutions” for your landscape and ensure that your yard is the beautiful oasis you are seeking.

Properly Planting Pansies and Violas this Winter in the South

Winter in the southern United States can bring milder temperatures. But even in this more temperate climate, it’s still essential to plant hardy winter flowers like pansies and violas properly. These colorful blooms survive the chilly months and provide a beautiful and vibrant touch to your garden when many other plants are dormant.

Why Pansies and Violas?
Pansies and violas belong to the same genus, Viola, and are perfect for the Southern winter garden. These flowers are known for their ability to withstand colder temperatures, making them excellent choices for planting in late fall and winter. They’re often the go-to flowers for gardeners looking to add color when other flowers aren’t blooming. Pansies, with their large, rounded flowers, and violas, with their smaller blooms, come in a wide array of colors and patterns, brightening up your landscape even when it’s chilly.

The best time to plant pansies and violas in the South is usually in late fall or early winter, typically from October to December. This gives the plants enough time to establish their roots before the coldest weather sets in. The cooler temperatures will allow them to settle in without the stress of summer heat, and you’ll enjoy their colorful display through the winter months and into early spring.

Choosing the Right Location & Preparing the Soil
Both pansies and violas prefer full sun to partial shade. A sunny spot in your garden that receives about 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms. However, if you live in a region with harsh midday sun or very warm winters, consider planting them in partial shade, as they can tolerate some shade and will still thrive.

Before planting your pansies and violas, make sure your soil is well-draining and enriched with organic matter. These flowers do not like to sit in soggy soil, so pick a location that doesn’t retain water. If your garden has heavy clay soil, consider mixing in sand or perlite to improve drainage. Work compost or aged manure into the soil to increase fertility and provide essential nutrients to your plants.

How to Plant Pansies and Violas

  1. Dig holes: For each plant, dig a hole that is about 2 to 3 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the root ball. Make sure the hole is slightly larger than the root system so the plant can establish itself well.
  2. Plant with care: Gently remove the pansy or viola from its nursery pot, being careful not to disturb the roots too much. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Don’t plant it too deep, as this can cause the plant to rot.
  3. Space the plants: Space pansies about 6 to 8 inches apart and violas 4 to 6 inches apart. Giving them adequate space allows for air circulation and prevents overcrowding, which can lead to fungal diseases.
  4. Water thoroughly: After planting, water the flowers thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots. Keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks. Once the roots are established, pansies and violas are relatively drought-tolerant but still benefit from occasional watering, especially during dry spells.

Winter Care for Pansies and Violas
Pansies and violas are resilient, but they still need care during the colder months to thrive. Apply a thin layer of mulch (such as pine straw, shredded leaves, or compost) around the base of the plants to help regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. Mulch also helps prevent frost heaving, where the soil expands and contracts with freezing temperatures, which can disturb the roots.

Although southern winters tend to be mild, there may still be occasional freezes. If a hard freeze is expected, cover your pansies and violas with a frost cloth or old sheet at night to protect them. Be sure that the cloth is not touching the leaves directly.

To encourage continuous blooms and prevent disease, it’s important to remove any spent flowers by pinching them off. If the plants get leggy or start to look untidy, prune them back to maintain a compact shape.

Since pansies and violas are cool-season flowers, they don’t need as much fertilizer in the winter as they do in the warmer months. Use a slow-release fertilizer at planting time and perhaps a light liquid feed once a month during the winter if growth seems slow or leaves appear pale.

With proper planting and care, pansies and violas can add a splash of color and cheer to your winter garden. By selecting the right location, preparing the soil, and tending to the plants through the colder months, you’ll enjoy their vibrant blooms from late fall all the way through early spring. So, get your gardening gloves on and make your winter garden pop with the beauty of these hardy flowers!

Transforming a Sea Pines Backyard: A Client’s Dream Come True

Nestled alongside the lush greens of the first tee and featured prominently in the RBC Heritage TV coverage, a beloved Sea Pines home was in need of some serious TLC in its backyard. With an eye on complementing the stunning backdrop of rolling fairways and greens, our client turned to The Greenery, Inc. to completely transform their outdoor space into a luxurious, vibrant retreat.

A Fresh Start with a Clear Vision
During the planning phase, The Greenery’s Account Manager for Sea Pines, Holly Haakerson, conducted a site walk with the client to assess the space and determine how to best breathe new life into the backyard. Together, they made the bold decision to clear everything out and start fresh. This approach would allow us to reimagine the area from the ground up, ensuring every element worked in harmony with the scenic beauty surrounding the property.

Key aspects of the redesign included:

  • Renovating the deck space to create a comfortable, functional outdoor living area.
  • Selecting Empire Zoysia grass, known for its durability and aesthetic appeal in the Lowcountry climate.
  • Incorporating vibrant colors through blooming plants that will come to life just in time for the RBC Heritage.

The backyard’s previous turf was suffering from sun damage and uneven growth, making it the perfect candidate for a revitalizing overhaul.

The Greenery, Inc.’s Approach to Turf Installation
When it comes to sod installation, The Greenery, Inc. takes great care to ensure the best possible outcome for your landscape. Our process involves several critical steps:

  • Soil Preparation: We begin by applying a preventative fungicide to treat the soil and create a healthy foundation for the new turf.
  • Soil Grading: Proper grading is essential to ensure good drainage, which helps prevent water pooling and encourages even growth.
  • Sod Selection & Installation: Once the soil is prepped, we carefully measure and cut the sod to fit your yard’s exact proportions.

The final and most crucial step in our process is rolling the sod. Using a 1,000-pound roller, we gently press the sod into the soil to encourage proper rooting and ensure a seamless blend with the ground. This step is key—without rolling, sod can look lumpy and uneven, but with the right technique, we ensure a clean, uniform look.

Why Empire Zoysia Grass?
For this project, our client chose Empire Zoysia grass, one of the best turf varieties for the Lowcountry. Known for its narrow blade and tolerance for partial shade, Empire Zoysia is a fantastic alternative to the more sun-loving Bermuda grass. It’s also highly resistant to insects and fungus, which makes it a durable, low-maintenance choice for homeowners. Plus, Empire Zoysia is soft to the touch and incredibly resilient, standing up to both foot traffic and the elements.

With The Greenery, Inc.’s comprehensive plant health program and our focus on turf care, this backyard is primed to thrive for years to come.

Adding Color and Texture
While the vibrant blooms won’t appear until spring, the landscape is already shaping up to be a feast for the eyes. Azaleas, strategically placed around the newly renovated decking area, will soon burst into a sea of color, perfectly complementing the surrounding greenery. These plants will create a dynamic contrast against the rich, green backdrop, adding both texture and visual interest to the space.

A Stunning Outdoor Retreat for Heritage
As we finalized the project, it was clear that this backyard transformation will be the perfect complement to the breathtaking views of the Sea Pines course. The combination of lush Empire Zoysia grass, a refreshed deck, and colorful blooms will provide our client with an outdoor oasis that’s not only beautiful but functional. Best of all, it will be ready to showcase during the RBC Heritage, where the stunning surroundings will steal the spotlight.

At The Greenery, Inc., we take pride in bringing your outdoor visions to life, one meticulous step at a time. Whether it’s turf installation, plant selection, or landscape design, we’re here to ensure that your landscape looks its best year-round.

Preparing Your Landscape for a Hurricane

Beryl, the first major storm of the 2024 season, has come and gone already. It left a path of destruction as it tracked through Texas…with widespread flooding, more than 2.7 million people without power and 14 confirmed tornadoes across the state.

That is a good reminder that whether you are new to the Lowcountry or have faced many storms – it is critical that you have a hurricane preparedness plan in place for your household and your landscape. There’s no way to avoid a storm, but it does pay to be prepared!

The Greenery’s Storm Response Plan
The time to plan for a storm is now, when skies are clear and before the threat is imminent. That’s our company’s philosophy!  The Greenery, Inc. prepares for hurricane season 365 days a year.

In the event of a storm, our goal will always be to prioritize and help as many people as possible. Our post-storm plan includes responding as one coordinated team with many arms completing a wide variety of tasks. We have tractors and mini loaders for moving large tree trunks and limbs, plus dump trucks and trailers for moving larger debris. This depth of manpower, coupled with equipment, machinery, and additional vehicles, makes The Greenery, Inc. one of the best prepared landscape companies and most equipped to respond to a crisis in the region.

Major Concerns
Flooding, high winds and tornadoes are typically the biggest threat with any hurricane or tropical storm. These storms often produce heavy rainfall, which can result in deadly and destructive floods. This flooding can persist even after the storm has passed due to runoff and overwhelmed drainage systems. Hurricanes can result in deadly storm surges among the coast, where the low pressure and strong winds of the hurricane push ocean water inland. Lowcountry residents are particularly at risk.

In addition, winds from a hurricane can destroy buildings and outdoor items and debris can become projectiles in high winds. Tornadoes can also accompany hurricanes and tropical storms in our area. These tornadoes can cause localized damage within the hurricane’s broader path.

How to Secure Your Landscape Before a Storm

  1. Plan ahead – Before the season begins, be sure to check your yard for dead or dying trees. Be sure to contact a local tree company to remove any hazardous trees or fallen limbs. It is also important to confirm that leaves or debris are not blocking storm drains around your property.
  2. Move anything light indoors – Decorative yard items and light furniture should be moved inside of your home, if possible. Examples of these items include – hanging baskets, outdoor furniture, bird feeders, gardening tools, wind chimes or anything else that is not secured.
  3. Secure heavier items – Group together heavier items that are too large to move indoors. Try to secure larger, potted plants together at the lowest point of your yard, like a hedge or a wall, to help block the wind. If you cannot group them together, try securing them with ropes or stakes.
  4. Lay stone items down – Heavy items made of stone, like benches and bowls, should be laid flat to prevent them from becoming projectiles. If you have a stone bird bath, don’t forget to remove the top of the pedestal.
  5. Sprinklers and lighting – Cut off power for your outdoor lighting and sprinkler systems or irrigation system. Turning off your irrigation system before a hurricane helps conserve water, protect your irrigation equipment, ensure electrical safety, and allows you to focus on more pressing storm preparations and safety precautions.
